Merve Hande Akmehmet is a Washington DC based economist managing multiple companies including a political economic consultancy, the US operations of a manufacturing company, and a board member providing global quarterly economic projections, specializing in geo-economics.
She is a globally recognized economist known for her extensive work on the costs of democracy, economic governance and international policy. Frequently attending high-profile conferences, she collaborates with leading thought leaders and policymakers to address global challenges. Her research and insights have influenced strategies on economic resilience, equitable development, and democratic innovation, marking them as a key voice in shaping the future of governance using soft power.
Born in Istanbul, Turkey on February 28th 1982, Hande graduated from the Koc School in Istanbul. After high school, Hande went to the United States to study political science and economics. She graduated from the University of Virginia with double majors in Foreign Affairs and Economics, and completed her Masters degree at the Johns Hopkins University in Applied Economics.
For the past 25 years, Hande served as an economist in many different global corporations, wearing many different hats, including Oracle Corporation, Bloomberg HT, Time Life Media Holdings, Turkish American Business Forum and the United Nations. Her main focus was market intelligence, valuation and financial market pricing on emerging market economies.
During her time in Istanbul, Hande worked at Akbank as an Economic Research Manager concentrating on the Turkish economy and emerging market economies. She has also directed Bloomberg HT's Economic Research Team in Turkey, providing live coverage on global economic developments and financial markets every day on live TV.
Hande is a founding member of the National Coalition of Turkish American Women PAC in Washington DC, and she actively engages in Turkish American politics. She is also a member of the Government Relations Association.
She speaks 4 languages, and loves reading antique texts and surfing. She is married and has one daughter.
